What Are Dental Implants?

The implant itself is a small metal post, that is surgically inserted below your gums, anchoring to your jawbone to create a stable platform to attach a custom replacement tooth that matches your existing teeth. How Do Dental Implants Work?
The goal of a dental implant is to create the most secure and comfortable platform for attaching your new tooth. To do that, the dental implant first needs to fuse itself to your jawbone. Just like how your other teeth are fused with the jawbone at their root, the implant will function as the root for your new tooth. After your gums heal and the implant has become fused, your dentist will place a small extension on the implant, called an abutment. The abutment will serve as the connecting piece between your new tooth and the implant.
In order to create your new tooth, your dentist will take a scan and a mold of your teeth. What Should I Expect When Getting A Dental Implant?
Not all patients are eligible to receive dental implants, since they require optimal gum health, as well as enough bone in your jaw to support the implant. Before you start the implant process, Dr. Bajwa will take a CT-scan of your mouth, which will allow us to assess your oral health, and see if you can support an implant.
One big factor when considering getting an implant is recovery time. There is approximately a 6-month recovery period after the surgery of placing the implant. Only until after that 6 month period passes, can the crown be placed on the implant to complete your smile.
