At New Wave Dental Smiles our main priority is making sure our patients have not only a beautiful smile, but a healthy smile. If you are experiencing swollen, inflamed or bleeding gums this might be a sign of gum disease and we encourage you to visit us as soon as possible. If you have any of the above symptoms please contact our Burien, WA office.
This is a service we offer that is performed by our hygienist. Periodontal maintenance is a variation of a routine cleaning appointment. The patient has been diagnosed with periodontitis (see below) and some form of periodontal therapy has been performed such as deep cleanings or gum grafting. It is typically recommended that a patient with periodontitis see a dental hygienist every 3-4 months.
Gum disease is caused by a buildup of bacteria in your mouth. It begins as gingivitis but if not cared for promptly and correctly can become the much more serious periodontal disease.
This form of gum disease is not defined with any bone loss or tissue detachment. The gum tissue is red and puffy, but can be treated and usually reversed with daily flossing and brushing.
Periodontal Disease “Periodontitis”
If gingivitis goes untreated it will lead to periodontal disease aka periodontitis. Periodontal disease does include the detachment of tissue and bone loss. You will hear us refer to the spaces between the teeth and bone as “pockets.” If you see a dentist regularly, these pockets should be measured once a year during one of your regular check-up and cleaning appointments.
Signs of periodontitis include but are not limited to:
- Red and puffy gum tissue
- Bleeding gum,
- Chronic bad breath
- Loose teeth
- Painful chewing
- Receding gum lines
